The first thing that jumps out from the survey results is that the pope, to a very large extent, will be introducing himself to the country for the first time.
The vast majority of Americans know very little about him.
Some eight-in-ten, in fact, tell us that they have heard only a little or nothing at all about the pope. That's even true of his own flock, the Roman Catholic community, 63% of whom tell us that they have heard very little or nothing at all about Pope Benedict.
So this trip is, indeed, his introduction to the United States public and to the Catholic community in the U.S.
If you look at those who are able to rate him - that is, the seven-in-ten Americans who tell us they know enough to be able to offer an opinion - Pope Benedict's favorable rating is at 75%, which compares rather well with other public figures. That favorable rating, for example, is almost identical to the result for Billy Graham in the summer of '07. And with the pope's own flock, among those who are able to rate him, his favorable ratings are even higher. Almost nine-in-ten Roman Catholics who were able to give an opinion of Pope Benedict have a favorable opinion of him.
On the other hand, about 18% of Americans who have heard of Pope Benedict have an unfavorable opinion of him. That is higher than Pope John Paul II and higher even than popes prior to Pope John Paul II.
Si "les gens" ne connaissent pas le Pape, à qui la faute?
Et pis encore, à qui la faute si ceux qui en ont entendu parler ont de lui une "opinion défavorable" ?
Le rôle des medias se manifeste dans toute sa nocivité, là-bas comme chez nous. A moins qu'ils n'aient atteint leur but, en constatant que leur bourrage de crâne a bien été reçu par sa cible.
Pas de quoi s'étonner, quand ceux qui sont censés faire l'information chez nous diffusent ce genre d'idioties pitoyables - ici, c'est France-Soir, un pauvre journal, dans tous les sens du terme, dont personne ne pleurera le dépôt de bilan définitif!...
